B H and I are Outsiders, the others are Aberrations.

Unless F isn't an Aberration, then I have no idea.

Ah, an unexpected 3rd Edition context. Interesting... but incorrect!

A, H, and I are not aquatic like the others?
I kind of have the feeling that no one is going to get this. heheh

If there was one more aquatic creature such as C & F, the answer might've leaned in that direction. Incorrect!

Interesting answer. Unfortunately, C & D are also devoid of psionic ability. Incorrect!

C, G and H don't have an even number of eyes.
Songgu Kwon 19th May 2016, 11:00 AM edit delete reply
Songgu Kwon
Ah, you have something there! And a good lawyer would have enough to try to make a strong argument along these lines.

However... H has no eyes at all. Though one could argue that it still qualifies as NOT having an even set of eyes.

The fatal blow to this argument is the fact that G's odd numbered eye is in fact... NOT an eye at all!!

So... Incorrect!
The Edwardian 19th May 2016, 10:45 AM edit delete reply
My guess is B, G, and I.

None of the others are demons, which should eliminate I, the Balrog.

G may look like C, the underwater version of the Beholder, but it is the fungal spore mimic of a Beholder, and none of the others are fungi based.

B may be humani-form like the F merman, but multiple arms cancels that, and I pair C and F together since both are underwater types.

My pairings are A-D, since both the A landshark and D (can't remember the name) are earth elemental types.

The E mind-flayer and H (ego devourer?) are both psychic attack types, and haunt eather the Ethereal or Astral Planes.

And C underwater variety of beholder with the F merman.
Songgu Kwon 19th May 2016, 11:07 AM edit delete reply

B is a demon. I is a devil. Your species identification of G is spot on.

So many pairs... but the third is elusive, no?

Incorrect!

Or just the AD&D version of the Monster Manual and the Fiend Folio... Most of the above monsters can be found in MMI, except for the aquatic version of the Beholder, which I think didn't make an appearance until the FFI.

Please feel free to count me out for the prize since I already failed once, but now the puzzle is bugging me...

If were are matching pairs, the ones that don't match to me are:

A: Land Shark (Bulette?), since it is not an actual earth elemental type, but glides through the earth because of a fluid its skin excretes.

D. Umber Hulk, which I thought was a Xorn (tyoe of earth elemental), but it may be paired with the A Land Shark, because they both burrow through earth at an incredible rate.

G. Gas Spore, which is a fungi that masquerades as a Beholder, hoping that adventurers *will* attack it.

The Edwardian 19th May 2016, 11:43 AM edit delete reply
Heh... And next I was thinking it would be B, C, and F, since none of those monsters have legs (Type V Demon has a snake for an underpart, Eye of the Deep has none, and the Triton as a fish undercarriage), but then G Gas Spore doesn't have legs either! Argh!
DocMesa 19th May 2016, 12:06 PM edit delete reply
A,G,H would be my guess.

The others are are looking towards the camera. A is looking up a tree, G doesn't have eyes and I have no idea what H is or what its doing.

CORRECT!!

A) Bulette, F) Nixie, and G) Gas Spore all share NEUTRAL alignment. All the others are EVIL of one kind or another.

Your Prize:
Choose one of the following.
A) monster
B) character name
C) weapon

It will be featured in an upcoming page. :)

Here's the complete list.

A) Bulette: Also called landshark. It'll come out of the ground and eat your horse from under you and shit. Neutral.

B) Type V Demon: She'll fuck you up with magic and psionic attacks. Oh, or just chop you up with 6 swords/axes. Nasty. Chaotic Evil.

C) Eye of the Deep: Aquatic cousin of the Beholder. Now with more pinchy doom! Lawful Evil (gotta have law & order, even if you live underwater... ?).

D) Umber Hulk: Is your party getting bored/complacent exploring the dungeon? Just have one of these things bust in the scene for good times! Having it say "UMBER HULK SMASH!" is optional. Chaotic Evil.

E) Mind Flayer: It's favorite snack is your brain. Has Genius Intelligence. You are what you eat, I guess. Lawful Evil.

F) Nixie: Good looking water sprites that have a habit of charming humans and making them their slaves for a year. After that, it's "Hey, thanks for all your hard work." and a lousy 401k plan. Neutral.

G) Gas Spore: Fake Beholder. It's just a hollow gas bag with a painted on eye. Don't get their funky spores on you! Neutral.

H) Intellect Devourer: It'll sneak up on you, fuck your shit up with its 4 claws, eat your mind and then masquerade in your dead body so it can eat your friends too. What an asshole. Chaotic Evil.

I) Pit Fiend: He's the Greater Devil you'll likely find manning the grill at a typical BBQ in Hell. Lawful Evil.

B,F and I clearly have nipples. My BF and I also have nipples but that'll cost you to see them. For my prize, I would like a picture of nipples, please.
Songgu Kwon 19th May 2016, 6:04 PM edit delete reply
Songgu Kwon
I hadn't considered the nipple factor. Though given the Bulette's alleged origins (snapping turtle + armadillo + demons' ichor), we can't completely rule out the possibility that the landshark may in fact possess nipples of some kind.

And then there's the Mind Flayer. What's he got under that robe, I wonder. Could it be, oh I don't know... some nipples?! Maybe.
biffboff 19th May 2016, 7:11 PM edit delete reply
biffboff
"Clearly have nipples", we can SEE that they have nipples (mmm -so nippley...). THEY'RE RIGHT THERE! Also, I believe mind flayers grow from tadpoles and the bullette is a mad wizard's lab experiment. Why would a beaked creature have nipples? I don't see why I have to be penalized for your lack of D&D nipple-knowledge. I studied the Succubus picture extensively as a youth! NIPPLE ME!

The definition of disgusting porn is too subjective for that to be true.
Songgu Kwon 20th May 2016, 3:38 PM edit delete reply

But... the very notion that there's no porn featuring D, G, & H threatens to invalidate Rule 34! :O
hibou 20th May 2016, 10:12 PM edit delete reply
hibou
correct! therefore ::shudders:: even D,G, and H must have internet porn!! dare you to google it...
DocMesa 21st May 2016, 1:31 AM edit delete reply
Well, my thinking is this:

B & F are the closest to being human in the group, so that's fairly likely.

C is similar to a Beholder and I'm fairly sure I've seen comic strips of them watching vast quantities of porn. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to imagine an aquatic variant.

E has mouth tentacles. Mouth. Tentacles. Do I really need to spell this out?

I is a huge demon - surprisingly common. Usually has a c*ck the size of a greatsword.

G is a spore - fairly unlikely.

H is pretty gross, aesthetically. Unlikely and no way in hell I'm going to check.

It was something of a coin flip between the Umber Hulk and the Landshark. The slightly alien appearance of the Hulk makes it less likely. With A, I've seen images of people riding them into battle, so maybe, out there, there might be an image of two people passionately f*cking on the back of a Landshark.

I see that this was already won before I saw this post, but The Type V Demon, Mind Flayer, and Intellect Devourer are the only ones with Psionic powers. This is what I would have gone with.

Or Eye of the Deep, Gas Spore and Mind Flayer are the only three with tentacles.

Or the Mind Flayer, Gas Spore and the Intellect Devourer don't have jaw bones.

BUt that fact that only the Bulette, gas spore and the Nixie are Neutral was lost on me. Bravo!
Songgu Kwon 25th May 2016, 9:21 AM edit delete reply
Songgu Kwon
Hmm...

Pit fiend has psionics too.

I think the stringy things on the eye of the deep is just some kelpy growth and the tentacley thingys on the gas spore are just some roots.

It appears that the mind flayer may not have typical jaw bones. I bet it has some sort of mandibles instead. Good one! ;)

B, F, and I have enough sex appeal to sell something. Though I am sure there are a few Mind Flayer-philes out there, they are not much of a market. Anything further out than that is deviant.
