I think that little drawing in the old monster manual c.1977 had a profound influence on how orcs were portrayed for many years. I certainly thought of orcs as basically anthropomorphic pigs when I was gaming back in the day. I think the current depiction of the orc is a kind of hybrid of the more goblin-like Tolkien orc and the boar-like old school orc. The end result looking sort of like a classic AD&D Half-Orc.

As a curious side note, according to the Wikipedia article on "orc", the old Gaelic name for the Isle of Orkney was Insi Orc 'Island of the Orcs (wild boars)'.

Heh heh heh! I haven't seen that pic in many a year! I remember that too. Orcs were pig-men, gnolls were hyena men, kobolds were little dog men (at least they looked like it in the old MM). Good old days.
