This showdown with the mercenaries dramatizes Durgo's rehabilitation, and points to him abandoning his life of crime. Blackfeather's party would be considerably more competitive following a merger with Durgo & Sons. The added muscle should translate to more challenging adventures. Eventually, once the party fills in its spell-casting gap, it could move onto trying to remove some of those particularly tough-to-get-at bosses.

I would consult with a gnomish lawyer before embarking on such an endeavor. You have to make sure you get equal compensation of treasure as well as a revolving pecking order when choosing looted magical items. Also distribution of EXP points can be a sticking point. Yeah definitely get a gnome.

Guilds in fantasy MMORPGs are much more like corporations than actual medieval guilds, which were more like trade unions. Maybe this could be a more or less equal merger, like Exxon Mobil. This could either work relatively smoothly, like a family business, or there could be ongoing competition for control. Clarence's negotiation skills could come in handy. It would be interesting to see how they all work as a team, in an adventure.

I remember when my Ranger/Thief found a Quill of Binding Contracts, which at first I thought was useless. Didn't have issues when I started attracting followers, but came in real handy when I formed a thieves guild.
